How much attic insulation does a Grand Forks house actually need?

For our climate zone, the usual recommendation is roughly R-49 to R-60 in the attic — call it 14 to 18 inches of blown-in material. Plenty of older homes here are sitting at R-19 or less, especially anything built before the 1997 flood rebuilds. Can insulation work be done in winter?

Yes — attic blow-ins and rim-joist foam happen all winter in North Dakota, and winter is when problems show themselves (and when crews can see frost patterns firsthand). Closed-cell foam has substrate temperature requirements, so crews may heat the work area first, but a cold snap doesn't cancel the job.

How fast does insulation pay for itself here?
